I became fascinated with birth during my first pregnancy in 1990. I was very frightened of giving birth but through my research I became convinced that natural birth was the best route for me. I gave birth at a birthing center and while I found it to be a long and difficult process, the elation I felt on the birth of my son made it all worthwhile. I continued to research birth and became a volunteer birth companion in 1992 with Mothercraft and took Doula training through Conestoga College.
When I became pregnant again in 2006 I once again delved into researching birth. I came across Marie Mongan’s book HypnoBirthing and was immediately intrigued. It truly changed the way I thought about birth. I had always believed that natural birth had many benefits but pain was an inevitable part of the process. Here was a way that showed me how it could be done more comfortably and with joy. I took the course and birth became something to look forward to rather than just get through. Her philosophy truly honours the wisdom of our bodies and the very intimate nature of birth. My husband and I enjoyed the classes and practice and had the wonderful, intimate birth experience we had planned for. I realized that most women do not experience birth as joyous and empowering so I decided to apply my teaching skills to share this important knowledge. My goal is to help women birth with dignity and joy.
